Introduction
Nutritional status of a person describes the accessibility of nutrition and nutrients exploit. These nutrients provide energy to the body, which is required to perform various body function and also stored as an energy for future use.

Healthy Weight
The human body consists of fat and nonfat components. The fat component is known as fat mass or percent body fat while nonfat component is termed lean body mass.

To determine recommended body weight, also called healthy weight, we need to know body composition. Body composition is determined by finding the percentage fat and lean tissue in total body weight.

Body fat distribution

Body fat distribution varies. Some people may be apple shaped and carry most of their excess fat around stomach. Other people may be pear shaped and carry their excess fat around hips, buttocks and thighs.

Total fat in human body is classified into two types- essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is required for normal physiological function. Absence of essential fat will deteriorate human health and physical performance. Essential fat mainly found in muscles, nerve cells, bone marrow, intestines, heart, liver, and lungs constitutes about 3% of the total weight in men and 12% in women (Figure 1). Women show high percent of fat deposition is because of sex-specific fat that is found in breast tissue, uterus and other sex-related fat deposits

Storage fat is deposited in adipose tissue, just beneath the skin (subcutaneous fat) and around major organs in body. Fat serves three basic functions:

Figure 1. Normal body composition of an adult female and male 1. Insulator to retain body heat 2. Energy substrate for metabolism 3. Padding against physical trauma to the body
The amount of storage fat does not differ between men and women, except that men tend to store fat around the waist and women tend to store it around the hips and thighs.
