Body fat distribution
Body fat distribution varies. Some people may be apple shaped and carry most of their excess fat around stomach. Other people may be pear shaped and carry their excess fat around hips, buttocks and thighs.
Total fat in human body is classified into two types- essential fat and storage fat. Essential fat is required for normal physiological function. Absence of essential fat will deteriorate human health and physical performance. Essential fat mainly found in muscles, nerve cells, bone marrow, intestines, heart, liver, and lungs constitutes about 3% of the total weight in men and 12% in women (Figure 1). Women show high percent of fat deposition is because of sex-specific fat that is found in breast tissue, uterus and other sex-related fat deposits
Storage fat is deposited in adipose tissue, just beneath the skin (subcutaneous fat) and around major organs in body. Fat serves three basic functions:
